In this species, the universal veil tears into large fragments that don’t always stick to the cap. also without a ring, but with a large bulbous base.

Cap: 25-90 mm diameter, convex to plano‑convex, sometimes shallowly depressed. Colour pale buff, pale grey‑buff, or greyish‑sepia, often slightly darker at the disc. Surface dry, not viscid. Universal‑veil remnants appear as fine, powdery to granular patches, sometimes forming low, irregular warts. Volval material coloured greyish sepia to fuscous, giving the cap a muted, dusty appearance. Margin distinctly striate, sometimes splitting.
Gills: White to pale buff, free, moderately crowded. Short gills subtruncate. Edges smooth to slightly uneven.
Stipe: 30-80 mm tall x 4-12 mm thick, hollow or partially hollow. Colour white to pale buff or pale greyish sepia. Upper stipe smooth to faintly floccose; lower stipe smooth. Base clavate to slightly bulbous (10-18 mm wide). No ring (exannulate).
Volva: At the base: a rim or band of powdery, greyish‑sepia volval material, sometimes forming a low collar. Volval cells globose to ellipsoid, often finely encrusted, similar to A. nehuta and A. pareparina.
Flesh: White, sometimes with very pale grey or buff tones beneath the disc. Odour not distinctive.
