Akanthomyces tuberculatus
(Lebert) Maire.
Description:
A delicate, pale cordycipitoid fungus producing slender, whitish to cream stromata arising from the body of a parasitised spider. Stromata are typically simple, cylindrical, or slightly clavate, sometimes with a faintly swollen or “tuberculate” apex. Perithecia are immersed, appearing as minute pale dots on the surface. The anamorph is Isaria‑like, forming fine white conidiophores and hyaline conidia.

Stroma: : No cap. The stroma is long, slender, smooth, white to cream, occasionally yellowish at the tip. Apex may be slightly swollen or granular, giving the species its name. Usually solitary but may occur in small tufts when multiple stromata emerge from a single host.
Base: Stroma arises directly from the host spider’s body, commonly from the abdomen or leg joints. Host is typically found in leaf litter, moss, or attached to low vegetation.
Colour: Stroma white, cream, or pale yellowish. Host moth often bleached or mummified.
Size: Stroma 5-10 mm long, 0.5–2 mm thick.

Season: Most frequent in autumn and winter
