A large, striking species found itNothofagus forest, recognised when young by its glutinous violet‑blue cap, densely crowded blue‑lilac gills, and a conspicuous fusoid bulb. With age the pileus fades to dark brown-ochre but the blue‑lilac stipe apex and context often persist. The stipe is glutinous below, sometimes forming a persistent membranous ring in dry weather.

Pileus: Up to 80 (-100) mm diam. At first hemispheric with inrolled margin, then convex, campanulate or umbonate‑expanded, occasionally plane or centrally depressed. Colour blue-lilac-purple in very young basidiomes, gradually ageing to dark brown, orange‑brown or ochre‑brown, often with a grey or silvery tinge. Surface glutinous, drying to a radially wrinkled texture; margin non‑striate, often with submembranaceous gluten remnants. Hygrophanous.
Lamellae: (20-35, -15) densely crowded; broadly adnate to emarginate, often subdecurrent with a short tooth; up to 12 mm wide, sometimes ventricose in age. Colour dark blue‑lilac when young, becoming paler then rust brown. Edges fimbriate or crenulate, sometimes conspicuously blue.
Stipe: Up to 120 x 15 mm at apex, to 30 mm at bulb. Upper portion cylindrical or tapering; always with a conspicuous fusoid or fusoid‑tapering bulb. Colour pale blue‑lilac over entire length when young, becoming whitish, pale argillaceous or pale ochre toward base. Apex pruinose and dry; cortina absent or sparse fibrils only. Below, glutinous to the base; in dry weather gluten may form a persistent membranous ring. Solid, becoming hollow with age; usually single, rarely cespitose.
Context: White to pale blue in pileus; blue‑lilac above lamellae and in upper stipe; ochre‑brown in stipe base.
Odour/taste: Odour indistinct; taste mild.
