A medium‑sized, hygrophanous brown‑scaled Laccaria distinguished by its buff background colours overlaid with dark brown to brownish‑black fibrils that crack into minute squamules, giving the mature cap a distinctly scurfy, radially split appearance.

Cap: 20-35 mm diam.; strongly convex when young, becoming plano‑convex, applanate, or centrally depressed with reflexed margins at maturity. Often radially split. Hygrophanous, non-viscid, sometimes radially sulcate almost to centre. Finely radially fibrillose when young; fibrils later cracking into numerous minute squamules and scales, giving a distinctly scurfy appearance at maturity. Background colour buff; fibrils, scales, and squamules dark brown to brownish-black. Cuticle of unspecialised, repent, subparallel, thin‑walled clamped hyphae 7-10 µm diam., with dark brown contents near the surface, often aggregated into clumps.
Gills: Adnate, distant, intermixed, thick, to 5 mm deep; pallid violaceous when young, becoming buff with age; glaucous.
Stipe:40-60 mm long, 3-5 mm diam.; ± equal or tapering apically; tough, dry, hollow; longitudinally fibrillose-striate. Colour dull pallid fawn to buff, paling toward base. Flesh concolorous with exterior.
